Claire: I'm a working woman, I run my own business, so I need my changing bag to be practical as well as look smart and professional. Dark colours are best, no flowers or patterns and light weight. My changing bag needs to double up as a handbag, and carry my IPad, so it needs to have lots of compartments to keep things separated.

Sheena: How does our changing bag (Maxi Elite) meet your expectations?

Claire: I love my new MaByLand bag! It ticks all the boxes for my needs and I've had lots of compliments about it. It's lightweight, holds lots and looks smart. The matching bottle bag is a bonus too (the crossover strap keeps my hands free!).

Claire: It's good value for money (£69.99). Most bags which fall into the 'smart' category are super expensive. I also have a bad back and I appreciate the bag being lightweight. Some leather bags weigh a tonne before you've even put anything in them!

Sheena: If you have to give a score, what would it be and why?

Claire: I would rate my bag 9/10, it's great. The only change I would like are longer straps as an option to carry it under my arm like a tote bag.

“As we are based in London, our Baby Carriers were originally inspired by the hustle and bustle of city life. It has challenged me to design a carrier that helps parents better adapt to the fast pace of urban life.” - Sheena Woods, MaByLand founder

MaByLand Baby Carriers have been designed as an essential parenting aid; whether they’re used on cramped public transport, taking a leisurely stroll in the countryside, popping to the shops, or settling baby at home. By relieving parents of extra bulk, freeing their hands and bringing them closer together; our Carriers help families adapt to any situation, making their lives easier.

No more bulky buggy, difficult doorways, stairs or escalators. With one of the main advantages being that parents are able to regain their mobility and travel light.

Held close to your heart, our carrier helps to strengthen the bond between parent and baby, as baby is snuggled tight, comforted by the feeling of being held.

Our carriers all have the capacity to face baby forwards, it’s a beautiful sight to see baby smiling at the world in front of them, they will love their new perspective.

“Using our baby carrier provides a closeness which strengthens the bond between parent and child.
Stored in the large pocket at the front, the blanket attaches easily to the front of the carrier and shields baby during windy and cool weather. The blanket is designed to adapt to the growth of the baby.

Interview with Sheena Woods - Baby Carriers

Why should parents consider buying a baby carrier or sling? What are the main benefits - is it just about hands-free carrying or are there deeper boons such as bonding, breastfeeding etc, no need for a double buggy if more than one child?

There are many reasons why a parent should consider using a baby carrier, I will just name a few!

1. Fewer Tears: Research has shown that baby’s who were carried for just 3 hours a day would cry 43% less overall and an astonishing 54% less during the evening. (Pediatrics Journal)

2. Hands Free: It is easier to carry your baby in a baby carrier, rather than worry about getting the buggy up the stairs, through small doors, or steer a tight bend! It’s fantastic for popping to the shops, walking the dogs, and even at home. Wearing a carrier at home means you can still do the dishes, or play with your toddler without leaving baby out!

3. Health Benefits: Babies commonly suffer from Colic, it is advised to hold them and walk around or use an upright baby carrier to relieve them of their symptoms. Baby wearing also significantly reduces the risk of Positional Plagiocephaly (Flat Head) which is the result of baby spending too much time in their cot, car seat, or buggy.

4. Build a Family Bond: Using a baby carrier is a great way for parents to bond with their baby. It also allows parents to quickly become familiar with their baby's facial expressions and movements allowing them to 'read' their baby.

5. Cost-Conscious: you can purchase a baby carrier for the fraction of the price of a buggy! For example there is no need to buy a double buggy.

For more details, please refer to our full article "TOP 10 Benefits of using a Baby Carrier".

What are the benefits for older babies of front facing carriers?

We believe that for the first few months, baby is very content with being carried in the front position, facing inward towards their parent. From a developmental aspect, the baby is adapting to life outside the womb and doesn't really need excessive stimulation.

This changes at around 2-3 months when baby's main interest becomes the human face. By facing inwards baby has a clear view of their parent's face and the expressions they make, which will provide baby with valuable learning experiences. Every baby is different, but there will come a time when baby will acitively signal to their parent e.g. by turning their head towards the outside world. If baby is able to support their on head (which usually goes hand-in-hand with this stage) it is most probably time to turn them to face outwards towards the world.

What about back pack carriers - why should parents consider these?

I feel that back carriers are fantastic for outdoorsy parents, who enjoy trekking and hill walking, and wish to share this with their little one. They allow parents to comfortably carry heavier/larger children i.e toddlers for longer periods of time, whilst offering the parent more support. Also there are day-to-day carriers that offer the backpack position, which is fantastic for carrying older babies and they offer parents an alternative to wearing their child on their front!

Obviously ensuring that the users back is protected in carrying a child is important - what do you offer to ensure the back is protected?

The Luxury Comfort Carrier includes a cross buckle adjustment at the back ensuring a close fit to parents of varying body types. The carrier also features wide padded shoulder straps and a thickly padded waist belt, together this ensures baby's weight is evenly distributed across the parents' back, shoulders and hips. Not only are parents more comfortable, this enables them to carry their child for longer periods of time.

At what age are children no longer suitable for being carried in a sling or carrier?

It really depends on both the parent and child, I believe it's an organic progressive stage, and is mutually decided. I have met parents who have carried their child up to 6 years old! I personally carried my little ones until they were around 10-12 months old, as they began to show signs of independence. As soon as my little ones learnt to walk, they began kicking out whilst in the carrier or protest altogether to be carried, so as soon as they reached this stage I decided to stop. It is also up to the parent, as it is hard to give up the bonding experience, but it can also depend on whether they can physically carry their child for a given amount of time.

How easy is it for carriers to be interchanged between users eg both parents?

The Luxury Comfort Carrier is very quick and easy to adjust between parents and caregivers, as there are only two quick adjustments to be made. The Carrier features two simple side adjusters/buckles that alter the length of the shoulder straps and overall width fit of the carrier and the padded waist belt also adjusts in the same way.

What advice should retailers be giving parents eg. consider the longevity of the product?

My advice to retailers would be to really get to know the product you are selling, ensure you and your sales team are able to clearly communicate all the product features and benefits across to the parent. Also encourage parents to try carriers and slings on, or give them a live demonstration, that way they can get a real feel for the product. Remember also that everyone is different, what may be ideal for some may not be ideal for others, so it’s a good idea to ask parents more questions and discover what they wish to use the carrier or product for, that way you can then make informed suggestions.

In the US concerns have been raised as to the safety of baby slings under 4 months old - what are your thoughts on this?

As a parent myself I am very aware of these concerns and there are of course plenty of pros and cons to be considered. I feel it’s essential for parents to do their research in order for them to make an informed and educated choice when deciding on whether to use either a sling or a structured carrier. Parents' choices are personal and should reflect what they feel is best for themselves and their baby. I strongly advise parents to ensure they are 100% confident on how to use their sling before using it with their baby.

What innovations do your products offer?

Our Luxury Comfort Carrier features a fully adjustable cross at the back, to ensure a perfect and comfortable fit for the parent. It also features a thickly padded waist belt, which helps to evenly distribute baby's weight across the shoulders, back and hips, allowing parents to carry their baby in comfort for longer.

The chosen fabric and high quality buckles, materials and finish allow for a more luxury feel and parents can still look stylish whilst carrying their baby.

Finally our Baby Carriers are the only carriers on the market that include accessories, i.e the attachable blanket and large storage pocket. We believe that this offers parents better value as everything is included.

How would you define Dynamic Mum?

Name: Sheena Woods

Age: 31

Career/work/role:
Owner of MaByLand

Children:
2 (23 months – Brannon and 3 years 5 months – Siobhan)

What to you is a Dynamic Mum?
Dynamic mums are capable of adapting to constant change in all aspects of their life, whether it’s family or work. They have a huge amount of stamina, are very pragmatic, and will persist until they’ve achieve their goals. Dynamic mums have full confidence in the decisive decisions they make and never look back; they have mapped out their future, taken control and will actively succeed!

What is your top tip or something you wished you’d known?
At the start of my entrepreneurial journey, I underestimated the sheer scale of challenges I’d be faced with as a mother. I had my two children during the first two years of starting my own business, so I tackled the steep learning curve consequently putting me through a rollercoaster ride of emotions. As my parents and relatives live very far away it was difficult for me to find help. However this experience had made me stronger as a person, which I am thankful for. I have become more confident with my own decisions and was able to find the strength to take control! My top tip is: be flexible and expect the unexpected! The plans you’ve made will most likely change in a heartbeat, rise to the challenge and take control. Always have faith in yourself and your decisions as you’ll be surprised how much you can achieve.

UK Mums TV Holiday Essentials – Tips and Tricks Mums Need to Know!

Who knew how many essentials your little ones need? If you think about the things you use every day and imagine cramming them into one suitcase weighing less than 20kgs, then no wonder we don’t know where to begin when it comes to holiday packing.

With airport security at its tightest and luggage restrictions becoming increasingly strict you’ll need a compact but comprehensive packing list!

But there’s no need to panic. Read our all-inclusive guide on what to pack so you’ll be stress free and beach ready in no time.

Baggage

Airlines set their own individual limits so do double-check to avoid any fines and invest in the right-sized hand luggage! Also – some will allow you to check in collapsible pushchairs for free, if in doubt – ask!

Liquids in hand luggage must be under 100mls and no bigger than 20cmx20cm. However, you are allowed to take enough baby food for the journey which can be over 100mls. Food must be in baby bottles and you may be asked to taste it at security!
Items allowed are:

- Soya milk

- Sterilised water

- Formula, breast milk or cow milk

- Baby food of various consistencies

We love: MaByLand’s Floral Changing Bag, £54.99 which is lightweight and waterproof. It’s just the right size to use as a carry on and doubles up as a handbag for when you’re there!

Feeding and Food

There are three easy rules to remember when you’re uncertain about the standards of food hygiene: If you can peel it, boil it or cook it then it should be safe. If not, don’t risk it.

Eating out - Although water standards are generally high in Europe it’s best to be careful. If you’re traveling further afield then you do need to take extra precautions. Avoid tap water, salads (usually washed in tap water) and ice in your drinks. If in doubt, buy international brands as they will be standardised.

Breast-feeding - You can stick your usual routine, but may need to increase the frequency of feeds. You can also increase the amount of sterilised water your child drinks to keep them hydrated!

Sterilising - If you’re formula feeding then you’ll need to make some adjustments but there are many easy ways to save time and effort. Instead of taking your usual steriliser try special disposable bags or a clean plastic container with cold water sterilising tablets.

We Loved: For when you’re out and about try Milton’s Portable Soother Steriliser (£6.99), which is ideal for cleaning soothers on the go and got great results from our mummy testers.

Health and first aid

Always take a basic first aid kit: see the checklist below. Follow safe sun advice and avoid the sun between 12pm and 4pm, wear wide brimmed hats and cover up little ones as much as possible. Buy the highest factor sunblock you can and look out for a 4 or 5 star UVA protection.

We loved: Outlook’s Shade-a-babe £29.99 ideal for blocking the strongest rays off your children.

Avoid insects – Insect repellents with DEET are the most effective – but pregnant mums and kids under one will need to avoid and choose ones containing lemongrass, lavender, eucalyptus or cedar instead.

We Loved: Try Asda’s Little Angels Cotton Soft Wipes, £2.48, they have a built-in pot of nappy cream which saves space in your suitcase meaning there’s one less product to forget which is great. They’re hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested so they’re suitable for the whole family.

Top Mummy Tips:

- Plasters make a great emergency socket cover!

- Don’t forget to get your family vaccinated early. Some inoculations need to be done up to three months before travelling.

- Use talcum powder as an effective way to get sand off your kids!

- To help settle your baby, feed them when you lift off. This can help stop ears from popping with the change in pressure. For older

- children try sugar-free chewing gum.

- Give fiddly snacks at the airport and during the flight such as raisins to keep children occupied and their mind off the journey!

- Put socks and other wrapped up items into shoes as a space-saver!

- Get a free copy of The Little Book of Holiday Fun from http://www.halosnhorns.co.uk for inspiration and tips on how to entertain your children anywhere. It even has a money off coupon.

- Give each child their own rucksack for the plane which has toys, a change of clothes and a comforter or blanket in. This not only saves you space in your hand luggage but gives them a sense of responsibility.

MaByLand Baby Carriers: Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start using MaByLand Baby Carriers?

MaByLand Baby Carriers can be used from birth, as long as your baby weighs between 3.5kg/8lbs and 9kg/20lbs. If your baby weighs less than 3.5kg/8lbs, then you must wait until your baby reaches the lower limit weight allowance.

Why should I use a baby carrier?

There are many reasons why a parent should use a baby carrier, here are just a few

It is essential for babies (especially newborns) to have regular body and eye contact.

- Using a baby carrier is a great way for parents to bond with their baby

- Using a baby carrier enables you to be more mobile rather than use a bulky buggy

- Helps babies with reflux and especially colic

- Your hands are free! You can tend to your other children whilst wearing the carrier, or even do the washing up!

Please read our article TOP 10 BENEFITS TO USING A BABY CARRIER for more great reasons why you should use a baby carrier!

Sheena Woods, the owner of MaByLand also did an interview with Progressive Preschool on Baby Carriers' discussing its benefits, advice, concerns and innovation. Please click here to read more.

How long can my child stay in the Baby Carrier each time?

You can carry your child in our Baby Carriers for as long as he/she feels content! Nevertheless, we recommend you keep an eye on your baby’s signs and switch between our baby carrier and for example a bouncer, buggy, or their cot. – As small children should never be kept in the same position for long periods of time.

My Partner and I are very different sizes , can we both use your carriers?

YES! Of course you can both use the same baby carrier, MaByLand Carriers have a very easy to adjust “clip and pull system”. We haven’t met a person yet that hasn’t fit into one of our carriers! So it doesn’t matter if you are 6ft7” and your partner is 5ft, to switch the carrier between you both its either a quick pull to tighten, or a push on the adjustment strap to make it bigger!

How do I wash my MaByLand Carrier?

As MaByLand Baby Carriers have a very innovative design and structure we do not recommend that you wash them in the washing machine, and that they should be hand washed. We suggest that you occasionally wipe the body panel (inside the carrier) with a damp cloth, as the breathable fabric will dry quickly, rather than washing the entire carrier.

When can my child start to face forwards?

Your baby can start to face outwards at around 4 months old, or until the child’s neck muscles are strong enough to hold up and support his/her head. Your child will love facing outwards at this stage, as they are becoming more and more interested in the world around them!

Why can’t I carry more than 9kg/20lbs in a MaByLand Carrier?

When designing both the Snuggle and the Trek Baby Carriers Sheena wanted to focus on the initial bonding period between parent and baby, when body and eye contact or most important. The average 10 month old weighs around 20lbs and by this stage most would have started crawling and some even walking and want to explore on their own. Sheena and others in her focus groups found that once baby started crawling or walking they became generally very fidgety when being carried in their carriers, so Sheena decided to design her carriers to last up to and around 10-12 months.

Is it alright for my baby to fall asleep in a MaByLand Baby Carrier?

Yes it is absolutely fine for your baby to sleep in any of the MaByLand Baby Carriers. Sheena and her focus group found that their babies would 9/10 fall asleep when using the carrier due to the movement of walking, and how warm and safe they feel when held so close. MaByLand carriers feature extra back support and an extra high head support so you can rest assured that your child will be comfortable when dosing off. Nevertheless, we recommend you keep an eye on your baby’s signs and switch between our baby carriers and for example a bouncer, buggy, or their cot. – As small children should never be kept in the same position for long periods of time.

I read somewhere that Baby Carriers can cause Hip Dysplasia, is this correct?

No, that is not correct. Your child cannot develop hip dysplasia by being carried in any known brand of baby carrier. Hip dysplasia, is an inherited condition diagnosed through a medical examination. The idea that baby carriers can cause hip dysplasia is a misunderstanding and has no scientific foundation. This is confirmed by leading child orthopedists. Please CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION

Are MaByLand Carriers bad because the baby is hanging/dangling from their crotch?

No, this is incorrect. It is important to understand that a baby’s centre or gravity is very different to that of an adult’s. Compared with an adult’s anatomy, baby’s head is much larger and his/her legs are much shorter and subsequently weigh much less in relation to their body. Thus, the child’s weight is distributed very differently; the majority of their weight is not in their seat, it’s also distributed in the baby carrier’s back and head support. Also you must consider baby’s low body weight, all of which results in almost no pressure being placed on the baby’s crotch. Please remember that there is no comparison to if you yourself were sitting in a baby carrier.

When is it most important to carry your child?

There have been many studies that show that it is important for parents to carry their baby especially during the first 5-6 months. It is beneficial for baby to be able to hear their parent’s heartbeat, breathing and voice, making them feel safe and secure. Ultimately this closeness, through eye and body contact help to form the close connection and bond between both parent and child.

Trek Snuggle Carrier

What are these buttons for on the front of the Snuggle Carrier?

Those buttons are what the snuggle blanket attaches to, you will notice that there are four buttons on the carrier altogether, two on the front head panel and two on the shoulder straps.

When would I use the Snuggle Blanket?

The Snuggle blanket can be used to wrap up your baby when there is chilly weather, it shields your baby from the wind and keeps them snuggly and warm. The cotton Snuggle Blanket can also be left loose in the summer to protect baby’s skin from direct sunlight. Also as baby often falls asleep in the carrier it darkens the inside of the carrier and helps keep them asleep for a little longer.

How do I use the Snuggle Blanket?

Baby facing inwards (towards you)

There are four slits in the Snuggle Blanket itself two at the front and two at the sides; these are attached to the four buttons on the carrier. There are two buttons on the headrest at the front of the carrier, and two buttons either side of your shoulder straps, this is where the blanket is attached to when the baby is facing towards you. The bottom of the blanket is loose due to baby’s change in leg length. The loose ends of the blanket can then be tucked accordingly into the carrier’s belt straps around your waist, and in the summer the blanket can be left loose.

Baby facing outwards (away from you)

The blanket can be used to keep baby’s body and legs warm. Attach the blanket to one of the buttons on the shoulder strap, then pass it under the folded down headrest (this stops the blanket from riding up, or covering baby’s face). Then attach the other end of the blanket to the remaining button on the other shoulder strap. You can either tuck the bottom loose blanket end into the carrier’s belt strap or leave it loose.

Can I use the pocket at the front of the Snuggle Carrier for my own things?

Yes you can! The pocket is large enough to hold your essentials, such as your phone/keys/loose change/wallet. But when baby is old enough to face out you cannot fill up the pocket so that its “bulging”, as it won’t allow the head panel to fold downwards.

I have a Trek Baby Carrier, Do you sell the blanket separately?

Currently the blanket isn’t sold separately, as the Trek carrier doesn’t feature the buttons that the blanket attaches too. We are currently working on a separate blanket accessory for the Trek carrier that will be sold separately, and hopefully will be launching soon. So please come back to our website and check!

LUXURY COMFORT CARRIER - COMING SOON!

We've also decided to design a baby carrier which will allo parents to carry their toddler until 3 years old and will be launching in Spring 2013!

Trek Snuggle Carrier Vs Baby Bjorn Original

In this article we are going to explore and compare both the MaByLand Trek Snuggle Carrier and the Baby Bjorn Original Carrier. We will discuss the pros and cons of each carrier in hopes that you will find it useful when you come to decide which carrier is more suitable for you!

Price

Both carriers are similarly priced. The MaByLand Trek Snuggle Carrier retails at £59.99 and The Baby Bjorn comes in at slightly more, retailing at £64.99

Overview

Baby Bjorn was founded in 1961 by Bjorn Jakobson, over the past 50 years they have developed a strong market presence establishing their place within the baby carrier sector. Baby Bjorn originally specialised in Baby Carriers and has recently branched out into other baby and parenting market areas such as feeding, travel, even potty training.

MaByLand is a relatively new brand founded by Sheena Woods in 2008. Her aim was to “make parents’ lives easier”. She runs regular local parent focus groups and applies her experience as a mum in order to create innovative products that parents’ can trust. MaByLand focus mainly on their baby carriers and baby changing bags, but also design toys, sleeping bags and even buggy accessories.

Carrier Overview

Both the MaByLand Snuggle and Baby Bjorn Original Carriers are front facing (worn on the front only) and have two positions (baby faces towards parent or away from parent).

The Baby Bjorn is a two piece carrier (straps and carrier body are separate), whereas the MaByLand Snuggle Carrier is a once piece baby carrier. The Baby Bjorn original will take a little longer for new parents to feel completely comfortable to use alone, due to the unusual clip and strap sytem.

The MaByLand Snuggle has a clear shape so new parents are able to instinctively tell where to put their head and arms etc.

The Baby Bjorn is suitable for babies weighing between 3.5kg and 11kg (approx. 0months-1 year) whereas the MaByLand Snuggle Carrier is suitable for babies weighing between 3.5kg – 9kg (approx. 0months-10months)

Ease of Use

Both carriers are easy to put on and take off, the Baby Bjorn Original has two pieces. The straps have to be put on, (similar to putting on a jacket) but you must ensure that your arms are in the right position. The body panel/carriage where baby sits is then secured either side at the bottom using two clips, and then on one side using the sliding clip, baby is then held inside, and the opposite sliding clip is secured, clip twice at the top to secure the carrier.

The MaByLand carrier is put on over the head and then fastened with a clip either side of the parents’ waste. Baby is then lifted inside and the carrier is fastened using two top clips.

Both carriers have been designed to be worn without the need of assistance. Bjorn’s carrier may take a few attempts, and some practice for parents to finally feel confident enough to use the carrier alone, whereas the MaByLand Carrier has a more instinctive design, but all carriers will require parents to practice in order to feel confident.

Clips and or Fastenings

Baby Bjorn use a number a unique and stylised clips and fastenings. The sliding side clips are unique to Bjorn Carriers; it allows the carrier to be completely detached from the straps. There are also two circle shaped top clips, these look great, but do not always make a clear “clipping noise” when securely fastened. Ensure baby doesn’t touch these clips as they are in arms reach. When pressed gently the clips unfasten making it quick to get in and out of the carrier, but this could be a potential hazard if baby were to accidently press them. The main advantage of the Baby Bjorn carrier is that it can completely detach, so baby can be removed without waking them up. The width of the Bjorn Original carrier cannot be adjusted, which means there is only one fit for new-borns up to chubbier 1 year olds.

MaByLand use high quality recognisable clips to fasten their carrier. They make a clear “clipping noise” alerting the parent that the carrier is secure; also these clips cannot be undone by baby, and are featured higher up, out of baby’s reach. The carrier can be adjusted at the side within seconds meaning a better more secure fit for a growing baby.

Materials/Fabrics used

Baby Bjorn original is made from 100% soft cotton and evenly cushioned throughout. As it is unstructured the Bjorn carrier can be machine washed.

The MaByLand Carrier is made from polyester which is more durable than cotton, and doesn’t rip or tear as easily. It has a durable tough exterior and super soft aerated interior lining. Polyester wipes clean very easily with a damp cloth, or it can be hand washed, but the carrier cannot be machine washed as its very structured, and this could cause the carrier to lose its shape. The MaByLand carrier is padded throughout, but features increased padding on key areas such as the shoulders and headrest.

Straps

Both the Bjorn and Snuggle Carrier have similar strap widths, but the MaByLand Snuggle carrier features longer length side straps, meaning the carrier will fit a wider array of body types. The Snuggle carrier’s straps are very padded in comparison to the Bjorn original, which is important as this is where parents will be carrying the weight.

Features

The Baby Bjorn Original features no panel separating baby from their parent’s chest, promoting closeness. The downside is that baby will only face their parent during the first initial few months and this is the period when they are more likely to be sick as they still have very sensitive stomachs. As there is no panel separating parent and baby, parents need to be careful when it comes to their clothing, baby can’t lie on itchy fabric, button and zip top also cannot be worn as they will irritate and rub baby’s skin. The MaByLand Snuggle Baby Carrier features a separation panel, which is lined with breathable smooth fabric.

A sleeping baby can be removed from the Bjorn carrier without waking baby, which is an advantage as babies often fall asleep whilst traveling in a carrier, the Snuggle carrier does not have this feature.

The Bjorn carrier has a nice tight fit for new-born babies, but the carrier is not great for babies past 6 months as parents cannot adjust the sides, this makes it very difficult to do up, its also tight and uncomfortable for baby. The MaByLand carrier comes into its own when baby has reached 3-4 months, and is great for bigger babies as the sides can be adjusted, and there are wider leg holes for baby’s thighs.

The MaByLand Snuggle carrier features a front pocket which is big enough to hold parents’ essentials such as their phone, keys or wallet, allowing for a truly hands free experience. It also includes a super soft terry cotton blanket which can be attached to the front of the carrier in order to shield off the wind and keep baby warm.

The Snuggle Carrier features a higher padded headrest than the Baby Bjorn Original, this helps to support baby’s head, especially during their first initial few months.

How to Choose the Right Carrier/Sling

How to Choose the Right Carrier/Sling for You and Your Baby

For those parents who are considering Baby Wearing, our latest guide has been written to help you decide on which Baby Carrier or Sling is best for you. There are so many different styles and types of baby carriers and slings out in the market at the moment; it’s difficult to decipher which is best for you, your partner, and your baby! We hope you find our handy tips helpful, if you have experience in purchasing a baby carrier/sling and would like us to add your comments and expertise then feel free to comment below or email us at enquiries@mabyland.com

Before you Buy

A few things to think about before you buy your baby carrier or sling.

Who is going to use the Baby Carrier?

Talk to your partner and ask if they have been interested in babywearing, if you are both keen to wear your baby then you will need to decide on a carrier which will fit you both and decide on a style that you are both happy with. Some carriers are easily adjustable to any size, others come in Small, Medium, and Large, if you both want to wear your baby it limits your choices slightly on the style of carrier you can choose, you will have to choose an adjustable carrier, or (if you really can’t agree) separate carriers! Styles range from Mai Tai carriers, carrier wraps, slings, structured carriers to back pack carriers, choose a style to suit you both.

How long do you want to use the carrier for?

There are many carriers available all with varied weight limits. You will need to decide whether you wish to carry your baby from birth upwards, or whether you’d prefer to wait until baby is a few months old. You also need to decide how long you want to use the carrier for. Some slings only last for the first 2-3 months before baby grows out of it – Great for closeness, and the first initial bonding stage (good to wear around the house). Some slings/carriers last up to baby’s 1st Year - great if you want value for money, and you and your baby will become for familiar with the carrier, its features and functions. Finally there are carrier which will last until your child is a toddler (these are usually much more pricey) Check for extra padding and back support for you.

Where Will You Use the Baby Carrier/What will it be used for/When Will it be Used?

Some parents only wish to use their carrier indoors - to settle baby whilst continuing with chores or playing with other children, and great for babies who have colic. If this is the case a material wrap or sling may be sufficient enough for indoor use as you won’t require back support or shoulder padding if you wear it for short periods of time.

Day-to-Day use and errands, some parents wish to use a carrier to pop to the shops, quick visits to the Doctors or even walking the dog - In other words, wearing their baby for a few hours a day. If you feel that this is what you want to get out of your carrier, then choosing a structured carrier may be better, as the weight is taken on the shoulders and they usually last for up to a year or even longer!

Use a carry baby instead of using a buggy – if you want to ditch your buggy altogether choose a carrier which offers you plenty of support for your back and hips, and is generously padded on all of your stress-points (where you will carry the weight). These carriers can be much pricier but obviously cost less than a pram or buggy!

What is Your Budget?

There are carriers to suit every budget, and be careful not to buy a carrier just for its brand name, as sometimes you are ‘just paying for the label’ and you can purchase carriers with the same functions for much less! If you want buy a carrier rather than a buggy we recommend you don’t buy a cheap carrier as it won’t offer enough support for you or your child if you are planning on wearing it throughout the day. Expect to pay £20-£35 for a very basic sling or carrier. £45-75 for a traditional front carrier (structured) and you can purchase ergonomic carriers, luxury fabric carriers, added lumbar support carriers etc for £90-£150.

When Looking at/Buying Your Carrier

Shopping in Early Pregnancy – try on as many carriers and slings as possible whilst your bump is still small! Ask the shop assistant to talk you through the different styles and request a weighted doll so you can get a better feel of the carrier and how it would look, and how easy it is o put on.

Shopping in Later Pregnancy – We recommend that you still try on as many carriers and slings as possible even though your bump might be a bit big! Ask the shop assistant to demonstrate the features of the carriers and bring along your partner to try the carriers on properly and ask his opinion.

Shopping with your Baby – It is great if you have your baby with you when shopping for a carrier, as they can test it out for themselves. Ask the shop assistant to demonstrate first and then choose 2 or 3 to try as your little one will become restless and irritable if you try on too many.

When shopping be sure to try on lots of styles of carrier in order to find the perfect one for you! Also ask the shop assistant as many questions as you like!

BELOW ARE A FEW OF THE QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD BE ASKING!

What is the weight limit and average age guide?

How easily adjustable is the baby carrier or sling? Will it fit both me and my partner?

How easy is it to put on? Can I do it on my own?

How easy is it to clean? Is it washable, wipe-able, hand wash?

How Versatile is the carrier? - Are they many positions? - Can baby face in and out?

Quality of material – is it soft inside for baby and durable on the outside?

ASK ABOUT THE CARRIER’S DESIGN FEATURES

Is there a headrest/head support for baby?

Baby back support?

Soft breathable interior?

Padded leg holes?

Wide padded straps (for parents)?

Parent back support?

Ability to breast feed?

Added extras?

Are there any extra accessories you can purchase in the future, e.g rain covers, blankets, etc?

First Time Parents Checklist!

First Time Parents Checklist

The second of our first-time parents checklists! With the help of some other mummies from our Facebook page as well as our focus groups we have put together a list of parenting essentials, “must-haves” to buy before your baby arrives! We felt that there are so many products out there that claim to be essentials, (but we all know they can’t all be!) so we’ve narrowed down the true essentials!

If any of you are reading this and feel we may have left something out, email us on enquries@mabyland.com and I’ll add your suggestion straight away! Thank you, and we hope this helps.

New Born Baby Essentials Checklist

Becoming a first time parent is daunting to say the least! Buying for your new arrival is even more so. There are so many baby products out there which claim to be “essentials” the truth is most of them solve problems that frankly don’t always need solving! We have put together a list of must have essentials to buy before your little one arrives, the rest (non essential things) can be bought at a later date, once you know your baby, and his/her needs as well as yours!

Must Have Essentials

Baby Bath Time, Nappy Changing, and Feeding Essentials

A Pack of 50 (or so) Nappies - It isn’t unusual for a newborn to be changed up to 10 times a day! So you may want to stock up on nappies to avoid making trips to the shops and then you get to spend more time with your new arrival! 50+ is a good starting point!

Cotton Wool – your midwife will most probably advise you to wipe your baby’s bottom with warm water and cotton wool to start with as their skin is so sensitive

Wipes – unscented wipes are best for a newborn’s sensitive skin, you can buy a few packs, you will never have too many! Jackson Reece or Water Wipes are both very gentle.

Changing Mat – A large changing mat for home nappy changes, it’s worth looking for one which is machine washable as well as wipe-able! John Lewis have some great Changing Mats starting at just £12!

Muslins – Great for mopping up baby messes, dribble, and runny noses. Buy a big multipack as you will be constantly washing them!

Lots of Bibs! The soft terry cotton bibs are best to start with as plastic bibs will be far too heavy. You will find that you may want to leave it on during the day to stop the endless dribbling soaking their clothes, as well as when you “burp” baby.

Bath Tub – A newborn can be easily washed in the sink and at a later date they can be washed in a regular bath tub, but the in-between stage is quite awkward so you may want to buy a baby bath. Flexi Bath is a great space saving option.

Baby Shampoo – Johnson’s No More Tears is a must-have; don’t use any shampoos which will irritate baby’s eyes or skin.

Lotion – E45 is great for moisturising baby after bath time. Use un-perfumed lotion.

Soft Towels – you can be special baby towels or use a regular soft towel to dry baby. Cuddle Dry have a fantastic range of baby towels, as does MaByLand.

Flannels/Wash Cloths – Easy to clean baby with in the bath. They don’t need to be special baby flannels (although very cute) regular flannels/wash cloths will do the job!

Hairbrush or Comb

Nice to Have Around (non-essentials)

Nappy Rash Cream – Sudocrem is the best known brand. Babies don’t all get nappy rash, but if they do you will want to ease their discomfort as soon as you can! So it’s great to have it around just in-case.

Bottles – Even if you plan on breast feeding you may find it a relief to feed your little one pumped breast milk.

Nail Clippers – baby’s nails will need clipping, and their fingers are so small baby nail clippers are great, but you may also want to buy a gentle nail file (as a newborns fingers are so tiny!) You can find these at Boots or even Mothercare!

Bath Tub – A newborn can be easily washed in the sink or even better can be washed in a regular bath tub with you! But the in-between stage is quite awkward so you may want to buy a baby bath. Flexi Bath is a great space saving option.

Baby Sleep Essentials

Cot – with a mattress

Bed sheets 2 or 3 changes to start with, you don’t need to over do it! It is exciting getting the nursery looking perfect but you don’t need to get lots of sheets and matching accessories!

Swaddling Cloths – its ideal to swaddle your newborn, at least to begin with as its comforting

3-4 New Born Sleeping Bags – Again don’t buy too many as most newborn sleeping bag range from 0-6months after 6months you will need to get a larger size. Sleeping bags are much safer than blankets as they can’t cover your baby’s face or be kicked off like blankets, also its easier for night feeding as you can pick baby up in the sleeping bag and then lay them back down once they’ve fallen asleep whilst feeding (without waking them up to wrap them up in a blanket).

A few Long sleeve babygros

A few short sleeve babygros

Nice to Have (non-essential)

Moses Basket – Great for night feeding and to keep baby close during their first few months.

Baby Monitor – if you live in a small to medium size house/flat I feel these are very unnecessary, but for some parents Baby Monitors allow for peace of mind. I think you will be able to hear baby crying, and recommend you check newborns regularly once you have put them down to sleep.

Musical Mobile – A musical mobile or cot toy will help soothe baby when it’s nap/bedtime, it also helps improve their visual focus.

Thermometer – a room thermometer may give you piece of mind. The ideal Temp is 16-20 degrees C. But I feel that most people are able to decide for themselves whether a room is too cold or too hot.

Baby Travel Essentials

Buggy/Pram/Travel System – TOP TIP spend some time choosing the right buggy/travel system for you, your lifestyle, your budget, don’t be afraid to go into a store, ask for help and have your questions answered.

ISO fit Car Seat – TOP TIP it’s important not to buy a budget car seat. Also buy a car seat NEW rather than second hand, most of the time the instructions are missing, and it can’t be guaranteed to withstand a crash. Ensure the car seat is fitted correctly, if you are unsure contact them or visit http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/index.htm

A Good Size Changing Bag – Big enough to fit muslins, change of clothes, changing mat, bottle insulator, nappies, wipes etc! (Remember to think of dad too when buying a bag, unless he doesn’t mind flowery/patterned bags!)

A Changing Mat – invest in a fold-up portable changing mat, they are much better than buying the disposable kind, and don’t trust the cleanliness of public changing rooms! Some changing bags are sold as a set instead of buying everything separately MaByLand do some great sets!

Baby Carrier – Baby wearing is a great way for parents to bond with baby, esp. For dads as during the first few months they seem to only be assigned to nappy duty! It’s great to get out and about, and it’s great exercise. MaByLand do some great baby carriers, for day to day use, and running errands. For baby carrying enthusiasts (who’d rather carry their baby than use a buggy) we recommend Ergo Baby.

Baby Clothing and Toys

You will probably have loads of baby clothes given to you as presents, because no one can resist buying little booties and baby suits! Your Baby will be tiny when you bring him or her home, but they will grow quickly! So don’t buy too much, as they won’t be able to wear it all!

Newborn size, all in one baby outfits are best for newborns, with the poppers – it is easier to change their nappy!

Within a few weeks baby will be able to wear 0-3 month old clothes.

Buy a warm coat if there is cool weather, or a footmuff for baby’s buggy/car seat.

If friends and family ask what clothes you would like them to buy as presents, let them know that you’d prefer larger sizes. It’s OK for clothes to be a little big, there is no shame in rolling up the sleeves or trouser legs or a dress hem being a little long. Your baby will quickly grow into them and out again! So bigger is better, as you will get the most out of their clothes.

Buy a Few Toys – Newborns don’t play with toys, musical toys are great for them to listen to and can be soothing. Don’t buy too many toys for 0-3 months because they will soon grow out of them and find them boring!

Essentials for Mum

Nursing Bra - Make it much easier to feed baby, great bras from M&S and Emma Jane. Ensure they are fitted correctly, and don’t buy these at the beginning of pregnancy as your breasts will of course become larger!

Breast Feeding Butterfly – Whether you’re self-conscious or not, when you are breast feeding you may want something to cover yourself up with when feeding in public! Faye and Lou do a really great breastfeeding cover.

Breast pads

Bio-oil – reduces stretch marks and soothes a dry itchy tummy. Leaves your skin soft and supple.

We couldn’t have written this list without the help of the mums from our focus groups as well as our Facebook fans! So thank you very much! Here are a few Tips from the lovely ladies:

REAL PARENTS – what was the most essential baby product you own?

Mum About Town – “A portable seat strap for restaurants (that don’t always have highchairs) and a diaper bag that doubles as a handbag.” Melody Grider

Number one on List – “Muslin Cloths, they are so handy for a lot of things” Tina Holmes “Muslin Cloths, my son had bad reflux and I used about 15 a day!” Hannah Goodyer

Baby, Seat Still – “A Bumbo is a must for every parent. When I needed to do a clean she would sit in it, have her dinner in it, and would sit and watch mummy have a bath! It’s just the best thing ever! They are quite pricey for such a simple thing, but certainly worth every penny” Kirsty Evans

Bouncy Baby – “A Bouncy chair – it’s where I always put her down to sit if I need to do anything and where we used to bounce her asleep. I have the Fisher Price Precious Plant one from Toys R Us. She is Now 4 months and loves the Toy Bar on it too!” Adele Baxter

Good Vibrations – “I had a Brightstars vibrating chair, it was great, put the vibrator on and it sent him to sleep in no time!” Melanie Barnes

Peace of Mind – “ I absolutely love the Angelcare Sensorpad! It really helped me sleep knowing an alarm would go off if my baby were to stop breathing!” Jenny Savage

Baby Bathtime – “I couldn’t have managed without my bath seat by summer. It is made of a soft material, and I have used it since birth and he still uses it now at nearly 8 months!” Hannah Goodyer

Bedtime Advice – “Faye and Low Rainbow and Cozio Muslins, baby nighties for easy nappy changing in the night and cotton wool pads instead of cotton balls as they are much easier to clean the baby” Lucinda De Watteville

What to Pack in Your Hospital/Labour Bag?

What to Pack in Your Hospital/Labour Bag?

It’s a good idea to pack your hospital bag between 32-36 weeks pregnant, even if you are planning on a home birth you may need to unexpectedly go in. We have put together a list of things you will need during your stay at hospital along with a few tips too!

TOP TIP

Check with your hospital midwives first as they may be able to give you a checklist, and can advise you on what to bring, they will also let you know what they do and don’t provide, as some provide more than others! For example some hospitals provide nappies etc and some may not.

Hospitals are usually very tight on space, and you could be asked to store your belongings in a small cupboard by your bed, so you may want to pack two separate bags - one for labour and the birth of your baby, and another for the postnatal ward. The second bag can always be left in the car or at home (in an obvious place where your partner can find it!)

TOP TIP

Why not make use of your new changing bag for baby and use it as your labour bag? Its big enough!! The MaByLand Changing Bag sets are great to use as a hospital bag, they are roomy yet compact and easy to clean too!

The Essentials for Labour (Bag 1)

Your Birth Plan and Hospital Notes – When you arrive hand them over to the midwife before you forget! Not everyone writes a birthing plan but if you want to write one your midwife will help you with this.

An Old Nightdress or large t-shirt to give birth in. You can buy special maternity nightdresses, but keep in mind it will probably get ruined and thrown away! (so don’t buy anything too fancy).

5-6 pairs of old (comfortable) Knickers – again they will probably get ruined so don’t bring your best undies! Some hospitals provide underwear, but it’s nicer to have your own! TOP TIP buy a multipack of cotton knickers (M&S have a good selection of knicker multipacks)

Loose Clothes for After Birth – something that opens at the front makes early breast feeding a bit easier, don’t bring your best night clothes they could still get a bit messy!

Make-up & Hairbrush, Hair Tie – Just a bit of foundation and/mascara even some blush! A small handbag brush will do, as those first happy mummy and baby pictures will always be around!

Snacks and Drinks – you will need to keep your energy up, energy tablets, and enrgy drinks are great! Also bring some snacks for afterwards too, such as your favourite choccies, and cereal bars are great too!

Camera or Camcorder – some hospitals are strict about video tapping, it’s a good idea to ask beforehand! TOP TIP remember to charge the camera, and maybe even bring the charger with you!

Nice to have – Home Away from Home

Bring some things which keep you calm and will also help pass the time!

Books, Magazines, iPod, Sudoku/Crosswords – bring an easy-to-read book or anything to keep you entertained and/or relaxed whilst you’re in early labour, as you could be there for a while! TOP TIP - “A book and some music!! Labour can be very tedious and long-winded (mine certainly was!!) so something to pass the time between induction and pushing was a god send to me as it took my mind off things” – Hayley

Battery powered CD player – You may want to play music while giving birth. Most hospitals don’t let you plug things in, so check, but you could use batteries.

Birthing Ball – eases early labour, and encourages dilation. (Check with your hospital first they may have some of their own.)

Dressing Gown and Slippers – For ‘taking walks’ around the hospital to help move labour along. And for your stay in the postnatal ward.

Pillow – hospital pillows can tend to ‘lack stuffing’ so you may want your own!

Massage and/or Aromatherapy Oil – if you love smellys and back rubs

TENS Machine – If you have decided to use one.

TOP TIPS FROM REAL MUMS!

KEEP UP YOUR ENERGY

“Giant chocolate buttons for me - absolute god send” – Michelle D

“I think that hand sterilizer is a must, fine mist water spray can be refreshing on your face when in labour. Dextrose energy tablets are good to suck on too.” – Faye & Lou

KEEPING COOL

“Water mist spray did wonders for me!” – Tanya C

“I had a little hand fan which was great!” – Melanie B

“Bring a flannel or sponge to keep you cool when pushing!!” – Charlotte M

DRY SKIN/LIPS

“Vaseline for your lips, my lips kept going so dry and it really helped” – Kirsty E

“Bring Moisturiser as I find in hospitals my skin always goes really dry, and socks!” – Vicky H

You may not have ot stay overnight, and sometimes you can be discharged the same day! Everyone is diiferent, but it is a good idea to pack 2 bags. The second bag will have all the things you and your new baby need during your stay in hospital.

The Essentials for After Birth (Bag 2)

Maternity Towels – or (Night-Time Sanitary Towels are better.)

Clothes to go home in – don’t bring your pre-pregnancy clothes as they most likely won’t fit (sorry!) Bring loose comfy clothes such as baggy jogging bottoms or maternity your clothes. It will take a little while for your tummy to go down.

Toiletries – bring travel size shampoos etc, a few hair ties, head band, hairbrush, toothbrush etc TOP TIP bring some Vaseline or Lip Balm - dry lips are a common complaint!

Nursing Bra and Breast Pads - Pack breast pads and maternity towels beforehand, as your flustered partner won't have a clue where/which to buy, esp if he is on his own!!

Baby’s Outfit – bring a few babygros, light mittens (stops scratching), a light cotton hat, or warmer clothing depending on the weather. Pick out one cute outfit to wear for his/her first family photo! newborn size unless you know your baby is going to be born over 10lbs, then bring 0-3months

Baby Blanket – for cuddles at the hospital, and taking baby home in! If it’s winter bring a thicker blanket

Nappies, Wipes/Cotton Wool, Changing Mat – some hospitals provide these things so remember to ask!

Muslins – bring a couple

Car Seat – You won’t be allowed home by car without an infant car seat. Some car seats include newborn headrests and others don’t, but they are sold separately

TOP TIP - If you drive, fit the car seat in good time (before your due date) and make sure you are familiar on how to use it safely. (Especially if its an ISO FIX.)

Nice to Have - Home away from Home Items

Dressing Gown and Slippers – For ‘taking walks’ around the hospital to help move labour along. And for your stay in the postnatal ward.

MORE SNACKS! – Hospitals aren’t renowned for their food, if you bring a few snacks with you to keep you going in between meals, it also means your partner isn’t sent on another errand to find food and can spend more time with you!

We hope this helps when it comes to packing your hospital bag, and that we haven’t missed anything off, if you’d like to add anything let us know! Have fun packing, smile, and get excited!!

TOP 10 Benefits of using a Baby Carrier

Top 10 Benefits of Baby Wearing

1. Fewer Tears! – Research showed that baby’s who were carried for just 3 hours a day would cry 43% less overall and an astonishing 54% less during the evening. (Pediatrics Journal)

Interesting fact! – In aboriginal regions where baby-wearing is a strong part of their culture, it was found that their baby’s would cry for just a few minutes a day!! In contrast, Western babies were found to cry for a few hours every day.

2. Build a Family Bond – A baby carrier or sling is a great bonding tool for dads, adoptive parents, and grandparents. Baby will be able to familiarise themselves with their carer’s voice, heartbeat, facial expressions, which all helps to form a strong bond and attachment between the two.

3. Helps Baby to Adapt – Babies (especially premature and special needs babies) are born with a delicate nervous system. By carrying baby close in a sling or carrier, they are not only comforted by the familiar sounds of your heartbeat, breathing, and your warmth, but this encourages baby’s development as they learn to regulate their own responses.

4. Read Your Baby – By carrying your baby close you will quickly become familiar with their facial expressions, and movements, meaning you will know if baby is hungry, fed-up, or wet without baby having to cry. Being able to recognise these signs also builds your confidence as a parent, (parenting confidence is crucial for mothers who are suffering or are at risk of postnatal depression.)

5. Learning on the Move – As baby cries less when being carried, they are in what is called a ‘quiet state of alert’. During this ‘quiet, alert state’ Baby spends more time taking in everything around them, and learning a thing or two!

6. Hands Free! – It is easier to walk around using a baby carrier rather than worry about getting the buggy up the stairs, through small doors, or steer a tight bend! It’s fantastic for popping to the shops, walking the dogs, and even at home. Wearing a carrier at home means you can do the dishes, or even play with your toddler without leaving baby out!

7. Baby Wearing is FUN! – It’s lovely to be able to cuddle your baby, and give them a kiss whenever you want! Babies love being carried too, they like being able to interact at the same level as everyone else.

8. Cost-Conscious – You can purchase a baby carrier or sling at a fraction of the price of a buggy! You can purchase a good basic structured baby carrier which will last for about a year from around £40! Fantastic news for cost-conscious parents! Thriftier parents can even try their hand at making a sling, very economical!

Medical Benefits of Baby Wearing

9. Colic Relief – Babies commonly suffer from Colic, it is advised to hold them and walk around or use an upright baby carrier to relieve them of their symptoms.

10. Reduces Risk of ‘Flat Head’ – Baby wearing significantly reduces the risk of Positional Plagiocephaly (Flat Head) which is the result of baby spending too much time in their cot, car seat, or buggy.

Mummy Focus Group!

Mummy Focus Groups in our Wimbledon Shop 2011

We at MaByLand wanted to gain a deeper insight into parenting and parenthood, we wanted to confirm as well as discover which products parents find absolutely essential and those that aren’t with given reasons. We wish to use all of the comments and gained knowledge and incorporate it all into our own range, as we aim to provide parents with products tailored to them by others who are just like them! We conducted 3 casual focus groups over a two week period. The lovely ladies brought their little ones along, we all sipped tea and coffee, and chomped on biscuits whilst we discussed their favourite topic, their little ones!

From our casual discussions we gained a wonderful new insight into the world of parenting which will prove truly invaluable when we come to design new products!

Our lose discussion topics covered areas such as their essential must-haves when going out with their little one, which included muslins, changing bags, baby carriers, toys and the list goes on! We also asked whether they as parents ever consider trying new baby brands and the answer was a resounding YES! Which we were very pleased to hear.

All the mums spoke openly and honestly about their likes and dislikes when it comes to changing bags, toys and baby carriers which will prove useful when we think about new designs.

Finally we covered our current product range; the mums all made incredibly insightful comments which we fully took on board, and we have already started thinking about incorporating some of their great ideas. We gave them all some of our products to try at home for a month or so and we can’t wait to hear what they have to say about them when they all come back for a feedback session.

We would like to say a HUGE Thank You to all the yummy mummies who took part in our local focus group! There were a total success, and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of the mums and their adorable little ones (who, by the way, all behaved brilliantly!) We can’t wait to see you all again next month and we hope you and your little ones are enjoying the goody bag!

Behaving toddler and baby during my sister-in-law's wedding day

It was my sister-in-laws wedding last friday, and it was a beautiful day!! Sun was shining, and most important my 2 and a half year old and 11 month old were behaving themselves, well, most of the time!

Siobhan was a flower girl, and she was brave and manage to walk down the aisle in a beatuiful village church next to me, holding an amazing bouquet!! I was so worried at first as she was so shy and whilst we were all waiting for the bride to arrive, I had to carry her.... but luckily, she saw all of us (bridesmaids) holding our own bouquet with both hands, she decided she should too!

Both of them enjoyed the wedding breakfast immensely, especially the bubbles on the table, they are these special little one, which is very easy to blow into, so Siobhan manages to blow lots of bubbles at every go, keeping herself well entertained! Good plan by Emma (my sister-in-law)!!

The dessert was their favourite, jelly and ice-cream!! This was Brannon's first time trying them, what a moment for him! You can tell from his face, he was in heaven!! Ate a little too much I think!!

To end the day/night, dancing on the dance floor, was Siobhan, with her beautiful flower girl dress on, the twirls make the dress flow beautifully, I personally think she might become a ballet dancer!! Um, sounds good to me!!

I am so surprised on how well it all went!! Everything went according to plan and it really couldn't have been better!I guess all the excitments really kept them both entertained without any worry!! :) If I have more weddings to go to, I will not worry a thing!!

A little message for my sister-in-law, Emma:

I wish you all the very best, thank you for making Siobhan a flower girl, she enjoyed it so much and you looked stunning!! :)

The Birmingham NEC Baby Show!

The Baby Show at the Birmingham NEC!

We had an absolutely brilliant time at the Baby Show in Birmingham last Friday – Sunday. Although the show was quite quiet in general on the Friday, it CERTAINLY picked up on the weekend, we were totally rushed off our feet! We’d like to say thank you to everyone who came to our stand, and a HUGE thanks to all the parents who waited patiently to be talked through our products and be given a full demonstration, we understand it was busy!!

I now know that if you want to have a leisurely browse at these types of shows and maybe have a bit of chat with the people at their stands, go on the Friday when it is nice and quiet, and vendors will have plenty of time for you, BUT if you are primarily there for the BARGINS then definitely go to a show on the Sunday, but expect it to be incredibly busy!

This was our very first show at the NEC, and it was great to be able to reach out to even more parents, and let everyone know who we are, and what we are about! We met lots of bumps, first time mums and dads, as well as those on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th and even 5th!! baby! Amazing! We also met and saw lots of twins which was just fantastic!

We met lots of parents who had received one of our free rattles from our Prima Baby Magazine Offer, we are so glad that your baby’s loved them! Don’t worry if you missed out because we will be doing more similar offers like that in the future, so look out for us!

We had such a successful show, and all our products were really well received. We had mountains of positive feedback from lots of parents especially on our baby carriers which were once again our top seller and snapped up fast, we hardly took anything back to London with us! We learnt from the London ExCeL Show in February that we must bring our camera, because we had lots of parents walking away with their little ones in our carriers! So this time we remembered, and we were able to take a few snaps of some of you, we will post them on our blog as well as on our Facebook Page, so look out of those!

We hope that everyone who signed up to become a MaByLand VIP enjoyed their free Bib Set, and if you didn’t get one this time we will be at the Earl’s Court Baby Show in October, so look out for us then!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE MUMS AND DADS WHO CAME AND VISITED US! WE HOPE YOU LOVE THE ITEMS YOU BOUGHT FROM US, AND WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU AGAIN!

P.S. If you did purchase something from us at the show, we’d love to know what you think, please write a review (it doesn’t have to be long)!

The changing bag had been received well, and we scored an average of 89%! Every base was covered as our overnight bag was marked on Looks, Size, Number of Compartments, Practicality, Style, Added Product Features , Ve rsatility, Quality, Ease of Use, and Usefulness.

We had some really fantastic feedback from the parents who tried them out, Rhiannon James commenting “This bag is fantastic quality and I absolutely love it! It has everything I need in a baby bag and it really does make things a lot easier for me.” – scoring us 100% in all categories! Brilliant, it can’t get better than that!

Also Helen Allen wrote “This is an attractive looking robust bag.”With Gemma McManus agreeing in her review saying “The quality of the changing bag is really good and hardwearing.”

The best part about winning this particular award is that our products were tested by REAL PARENTS, and the bags were used in their day-to-day lives. This means much more to us coming from other parents (the experts), as it is great to confirm that we do have some really lovely products and others who are like us agree!

Thank you Bizziebaby testers for taking the time in your busy lives to review our overnight changing bag and for your wonderful feedback. We will of course take it ALL into account, as that is what we are all about “Sharing our Experience”, then taking those experiences and incorporating them into our product range. Your comments really make a difference to us and will help us to develop and create an even better product range!

Hi,

My daugther, almost 2 and a half has become increasingly difficult to feed during meal times. She takes more than an hour to finish her meal at home!

Meal times are the only times where I get stressed about it as she's quite thin, so to me, I feel like I need to make sure she eats a good amount, otherwise I won't be happy.

But perhaps I have been too hard on her? I'm going to try reverse psychology and see if this would work.

If you have any similar situations with your toddler, please share some advice....

Thanks.

What is the right age for nursery?

It has always been in my mind that if you have the flexibility of not going back to work at a tight time frame, then you should be able to relax and choose the right age for your child to go to nursery.

In my situation, I work at my business and in my office, I dedicate a play area for my children to play, so I can take them there with me. It is difficult to balance work and playtime with them, but I felt that it's important to be with them as much as possible when they're young.

My girl, Siobhan, is now 2 years and 4 months old, she has only been in the nursery 3 months ago, and since she has been in nursery, she seems to have developed her skills much more than she would if she's with me all the time. With this, I'm beginning to feel that perhaps for my second son, Brannon, should go to nursery at an earlier age than Siobhan. But what age is right?

Personally, I might try him once he's walking, as I remembered from Siobhan, once she started walking, her brain seems to click shortly after and much quicker day by day too.... so perhaps when I felt that from Brannon, that should be the right time for him to go to nursery?!

What do you think?

How to lose weight after birth?

There are many ways that we can lose weight after birth, you can go to the gym to burn more energy, but I think breastfeeding your baby, pushing a heavy buggy would do the trick!

Oh, and of course if you have more than one child, that would definately work, without you even realising it!

My days consist of rigid routines as I have two little beasties, one I called "schnuffle monkey" and the other I called "smiley". Both have their routine which I stick to, as well as my work commitments.

So juggling two children with work has been hard work, but worth it! Seeing them smiling, watching them grow so quickly, especially their brain development, how things suddenly click with them one day and tell you about it! Sometimes I enjoy just watching them play, and forget all of my day to day worries, it's very relaxing and soothing...

All of this has contributed to my weight loss. With 2 babies, I lost a total of 13 pounds, not bad I thought! I actually managed to get in the those tight fitting dresses that I once bought on sale and motivate myself to get in it, never works of course, until now!

Although I have to say, breastfeeding makes you lose the weight and get back to shape quickly, there is one little downside, is your breast also gets smaller! But I guess the main reason is that we're feeding our children! So all those important nutrients have gone into them. When I think about how healthy they are, I think it's worth it!

What about you? How did you lose your weight?
